Antibacterial Activity of Certain Cephalopods from Andamans, India

چکیده
Cephalopods are well known for their bioactive secondary metabolites like Ink and very few studies have been carried with respect to bioactivity of their tissues. This study focuses on the antibacterial activity of the methanolic extracts from the body tissues of selected cephalopod species Sepioteuthis lessoniana, Sepia brevimana and Octopus cyaneus against five human pathogens. Gram positive Staphylococcus aureus MTCC 96, Bacillus subtilis MTCC 441 and Gram negative: Escherichia coli MTCC 443, Vibrio cholerae MTCC 3906 and Klebsiella pneumoniae MTCC 109 were used for the activity by well diffusion method. The methanolic extracts of Sepia brevimana 100 μl concentrations was found to be effective against Klebsiella pneumonia (19mm), 100 μl concentration Octopus cyaneus had shown significant activity (17mm) against Escherichia coli and Vibrio cholera. The result suggests that the methanolic extract of cephalopods tissues showed appreciable antibacterial activity against selected human pathogens and its potential can be used for the pharmaceutical and food industrial based applications.

Synthesis and Biological Activity of Certain Mannich Bases Derivatives from 1, 2, 4-Triazoles
Substituted 1, 2, 4- Triazoles have shown multiple biological activities such as anti-inflammatory, anti fungal, etc. 5-mercapto triazoles were prepared from the potassium dithiocarbazinates. These triazoles were used for preparation of different derivatives by two different schemes. In the first scheme the Mannich bases were prepared from 5- marcapto-s triazole Quinazolines. The 5-Marcato-s-Tr...
متن کاملA Hospital Based Study on Anemia Prevalence in Children of an Indian Island
Background Anemia is a major public health problem in India, affects all age groups but children and women in childbearing age group are the most vulnerable. However, data from hospital patients of Indian islands are not available. We aimed to study the prevalence of anemia among children aged 2-12 years of age attending a tertiary care hospital (India). Materials and Methods A total of 444 chi...

The 4.3-Mb genome of Lutibaculum baratangense strain AMV1(T), isolated from a soil sample collected from a mud volcano in Andamans, India, is reported. The draft genome of strain Lutibaculum baratangense AMV1(T) consists of 4,300,776 bp with a G+C content of 66.93 mol% and 4,198 predicted coding regions, including 56 RNAs.
متن کاملSynthesis of silver nanoparticles and their antibacterial activity
In study, spherical Silver nanoparticles (SNPs) were synthesized by chemical reduction method from a metal precursor silver nitrate in presence of an anionic surfactant and strong reducing agent. In this experimental work, SNPs are synthesized in presence of different concentration of stabilizing agent and effect of stabilizing agent on size distribution of SNPs have been observed. Further anti...
متن کاملA Hospital Based Bivariate Analysis of Nutritional Status and its Determinants among the Children Aged 2 to 12 Years in an Indian Island
Background: Malnutrition in children is a major public health problem in developing countries and is one of the common causes of mortality and morbidity in children. We aimed to determine the nutritional status of children aged 2-12 years of age using World Health Organisation(WHO) Z score for Weight for age (WFA)/Body Mass Index (BMI) for age (for children above 108 months), and to evaluate as...
